 I thank all the authors that I have included in this book. Through their respective works, they have truly motived and enlightened me on my quest towards becoming a better me. It gives me great pleasure to write about the works of such authors who have a worldwide impact today and shall be an influencing force for the ages to come. I thank them from the depth of my heart, for the pleasure, insight and, encouragement that they have provided.

Ernest Hemingway has always been my favorite, his Old Man and the Sea, has touched my soul and always filled me with new hope, while Herman Hess and his works have always made me question life and its purpose. Works of Og Mandino grips my heart and as he gives a powerful message in these times depression and frustration, while Richard Bach describes the miracles that happen to men and women in all walks of life, the power of our subconscious mind and creating our own destiny with it. Dan Millan is equally inspiring and he guides us through examples and techniques that he himself follows, while Paulo Coelho makes me believe that everything is possible through the power of perseverance and prayers. Robin Sharma is also a writer that I enjoy reading; his words are simple yet powerful and have always motivated me in my life.

Well, in life we all desire and pine for health, wealth, happiness, security, and peace of mind. But the elementary question is how many of us have achieved these goals? The writers represented in this book write to share with us different techniques, processes, or modus operandi that heal us as well as guide us in becoming whole and perfect. Few chapters included here have already been published in various books and journals and have been collected together in the book at the request of my Publisher and friends.

Paulo Coelho is more than just a writer. He is also a social and cultural phenomenon that deserves to be studied. (p185, Confession of a Pilgrim)

The present book is a modest attempt at a systematic study and critically appreciation of ten novels of Paulo Coelho, who is one of the most popular authors of The New Age Fiction. The book is partially based on my Ph.D thesis which endeavors to study the works of Paulo Coelho and show how in this age perseverance can becomes a way of achieving personal destination. Paulo Coelho is a Portuguese writer who emerged on the literary scene in 1995 with his best-seller The Pilgrimage. Paulo Coelho writes in Portuguese, all the novels, taken up for the research are translated works. Eight novels namely, The Pilgrimage, The Alchemist, The ValkyriesBy the River Piedra I sat Down and Wept, Veronica Decides to DieThe Devil and Miss Prym, The Zahir and The Winner Stands Alone, were includes for research purpose and were also included in the first edition of my book ‘A Critical Study of the Paulo Coelho’s novels’. In this addition two more novels namely Aleph and Hippie are also included. Few chapters from this book have already been published in various magazines.

The book tries to show how the novels of Paulo Coelho are a call to each of us to live our dreams, to grip the uncertainty of life, and to rise to meet our own unique destiny. The characters in the novel show that the aim of life is to attain the highest ethical goal through happiness, personal well-being, and personal calling- eudemonia. The novels show a way of navigating through life. Coelho uses simple, clear language to blend religious and philosophical concepts in his work. The book also shows how in his inimitable style, Paulo Coelho help us to discover the warrior of light within each of us. All biographical interest, therefore, held relevant are included.

In the book I have tried to show how various characters in the respective novels of Paulo Coelho, continue their search – search for treasure, for sword, for love, for angels, cleaning past life experiences and ultimately the discovery of self. The protagonists in the respective novels show a way of life.In spite of obstacles and difficulties, through perseverance they are able to reach their respective destiny. Coelho believes that our Personal Legend is our destiny on this earth. Personal Legend is the path we decide to take, and it is the path, that fills our hearth with happiness and enthusiasm. Personal Legend means the soul’s mission on this third dimension.

In this era, the novels of Paulo Coelho have become a manual for self-motivation and inspiration for many, yet as such, no elaborate research has been undertaken on his novels. Consequently, this book is a modest attempt to acquaint the readers with the outstanding writer of our age and to suggest what makes him exceptional and popular. There is much in Coelho that appeals not only to the critical reader, a spiritual reader, a philosopher, but also to a nonprofessional reader, who reads for entertainment and enlightenment. The best thing about his novels is that it touches the heart and gives courage. The purpose of the book is also to systemise Coelho’s thoughts as they issue from the novels and show how they gradually developed into a philosophy.

The quotes by Paulo Coelho are randomly taken from his books as well as from his blog, FB and Twitter account. It was not possible to give references for it, as they were just jotted down in my dairy when I was reading his works, but I was tempted and took the liberty to include it in this book as they are full of inspiration and they also depict his thinking and philosophy of life.

I take this opportunity of thanking all those who have helped me in this venture. In particular, I want to thank my mother, retired Professor in English, Mrs P.K. Sharma and my father, an ex- freedom fighter Mr K.K. Sharma for always being with me with their unconditional love and blessings. I express my thanks to my sister Ms Atal Sharma, duty executive, AIR, Rajkot, for her motivation. I am deeply grateful to my husband Pankajkumar Thaker for his constant help. Special loving thanks, to my kids Himika and Pallav, for their loving support throughout the writing of this book. A big thanks to Arjun Dave and the Vedant Publications. Lastly but not least, I thank God Shiv-Shiva, divine angels, masters, teachers and my guru Shivbaba, as my source of enlightenment and grace.

Life is Beautiful

 LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL

😃😄😇😊

In Mahabharat, Karna asks Lord Krishna -

"My mother left me the moment I was born. Is it my fault I was born an illegitimate child?```

```I did not get the education from Dhronacharya because I was considered a non-Kshatriya.```
```Parshu-Raam taught me but then gave me the curse to forget everything since I was a Kshatriya.```

```A cow was accidentally hit by my arrow & its owner cursed me for no fault of mine.```
```I was disgraced in Draupadi's Swayamvar.```

```Even Kunti finally told me the truth only to save her other sons.```
```Whatever I received was through Duryodhana's charity.```

```So how am I wrong in taking his side?"```
Lord Krishna replies --
``` "Karna, I was born in a jail.```

```Death was waiting for me even before my birth.```
```The night I was born I was separated from my birth parents.```

```From childhood, you grew up hearing the noise of swords, chariots, horses, bow, and arrows. I got only cow herd's shed, dung, and multiple attempts on my life even before I could walk!```
```No army, no education. I could hear people saying I am the reason for all their problems.```

```When all of you were being appreciated for your valor by your teachers I had not even received any education. I joined Gurukula of Rishi Sandipani only at the age of 16!```
```You are married to a girl of your choice. I didn't get the girl I loved & rather ended up marrying those who wanted me or the ones I rescued from demons.```

```I had to move my whole community from the banks of Yamuna to far off Sea shore to save them from Jarasandh. I was called a coward for running away!!```
```If Duryodhana wins the war you will get a lot of credit. What do I get if Dharmaraja wins the war? Only the blame for the war and all related problems...```

Remember one thing, Karna. Everybody has challenges in life.

```LIFE IS NOT FAIR ON ANYBODY!!!```
```Duryodhana also has a lot of unfairness in life and so has Yudhhishthir.```

``` But what is Right (Dharma) is known to your mind (conscience).
No matter how much unfairness we got, how many times we were disgraced,
how many times we were denied what was due to us,
what is important is how you REACTED at that time.```
```Stop whining Karna. Life's unfairness does not give you license to walk the wrong path...```

Always remember, Life may be tough at a point, but DESTINY is not

Comparisons - a short story

Comparisons - A Short Story

Shweta covered a distance of 10 km in one hour. Akash covered the same distance in one and a half hours.

Which of the two is faster and healthier??
Of course our answer will be Shweta.
What if we say that Shweta covered this distance on a prepared track while Akash did it by walking on a sandy path???
Then our answer will be Akash.

But when we come to know that Shweta is 50 years old while Akash is 25 years old??
Then our answer will be Shweta again.
But we also come to know that Akash's weight is 140 kg while Shweta's weight is 65 kg.
Again our answer will be Akash
As we learn more about Akash and Shweta, our opinions and judgments about who is better will change.
The reality of life is also similar. We form opinions very superficially and hastily, due to which we are not able to do justice to ourselves and others.

Opportunities vary.
Life is different.
Resources differ.
Problems change.
Solutions are different.

Therefore the excellence of life is not in comparing with anyone but in testing oneself.

You are the best.

Stay as you are and keep trying your best according to your  circumstances.
